HIMSS Introduces Quality Primer

Confused about quality reporting? You won’t be for long. HIMSS has introduced Quality 101, a new online primer designed to help health care providers understand quality measurement. Quality reporting is an essential component of an electronic health record (EHR)—but until recently, quality improvement activities and quality measurement have been separated, according to Lou Diamond, chairman of HIMSS Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes Committee. “With the passage of ARRA and the meaningful use requirements for incentive payment from CMS, we have the de facto merging of these two activities,” says Diamond. To help clear up any confusion about the two, Diamond adds that a new web site developed by the HIMSS Patient Safety & Quality Outcomes Committee will attempt to “bridge these two parallel worlds by providing basic information and updates focused on quality measurement and improvement.” The web site, Quality 101 , will cover a number of issues related to Quality, including: The Basics, Key Industry Players, Quality & Meaningful Use, Public Reporting, Quality/Cost Relationship, Clinical Decision Support, and Resources. The web site will be rolled out in quarterly phases:  Phase 1 will be an overview of quality measures and Phase 2 will be an overview of the Plan-D-Study-Act (PDSA) approach to quality improvement.
